This module starts with students exploring the natural movement of water from its source in the mountains, through the upper mountain areas, down through agricultural land and urban areas before flowing out into the sea. Students will see the changes that can occur along the water's journey and the many pollutants that can fill the river between its source and the ocean. Once at the ocean, students will examine the 'tragedy of the commons', a metaphorical game to emphasis the impact of over-fishing. In groups, students will discuss actions that can be taken to reduce pollution and over-fishing before revisiting the model river and putting their changes into action.
The Wild Waterways module is applicable to a wide range of curriculum aspects from Grade 3 up to Year 10. View the chart here to see where it can fit into your upcoming school topics.
